Wheels for Life Brings Dental Care to a Migrant School

By Dr. David Hoh

On December 13 ,2019, the United Foundation for China’s Health (UFCH) Wheels for Life mobile clinic visited Tong Xin Migrant School in the northeast outer suburbs of Beijing.UFCH brought a team including myself, the dentist, United Family Dental Frontline Manager Candy Xue and Foundation WFL Manager Rebecca Liu.

Tong Xin Migrant School cares for children from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Most of these children have little dietary ororal hygiene education or access to dental clinics or dentists. Although they had dental problems, I found that the children were all very well behaved and were not afraid of opening their mouths wide for me to examine their teeth.

Assisted well by Candy and Rebecca, I was able to visually examine all of the children’s teeth on the Wheels for Life (bus) mobile clinic. The inside of the bus is similar to a medial consultation room and we were able to examine 61 children under the age of 7 years old well, using medical gloves and mouth mirrors. I found there were many children in need of dental treatment for their dental decay or broken teeth.

We explained the dental problems to the teachers or children’s parents and recommended improvements for their oral hygiene. For two children who had the most severe dental problems, we created a treatment plan so we can provide dental treatment for them at the main hospital. Hence the cost will be covered by the medical service donation of United Family Healthcare.

With our dental services and the Wheels for Life program, hopefully we can give these children improved care for their teeth and gums and a healthier, happier smile.

United Family Healthcare, established in Beijing since 1997, has donated a total of 150,000,000 RMB in medical services, and the number of patient visits in UFH hospitals and clinics across China exceeded 20,000.
