Jiaozuo Children’s Welfare Home

Over a decade, United Foundation for China’s Health (UFCH) and United Family Healthcare (UFH) have offered medical check-ups for Jiaozuo Children’s Welfare Home on a quarterly basis. Many children here need better nutrition, medical care and nursing of higher standard. We are now cooperating with Chapin House, JFR Technology Co., Ltd and L’LEONE International Co., Ltd. and they have donated capital, atomizers and aliments, contributing to the improvement of the children’s life and living quality.

Our trip get started……

At 5 o’clock in the morning on Sept. 21, 2017, with the first glimmer of dawn, Dr. Yannie Qin, pediatrician and Shirley Shi, PEDS nurse of Shanghai United Family Hospital, accompanied by the staff of UFCH, are about to travel over 1,000 kilometers carrying their medical kits and travelling bags on their back to Jiaozuo Children’s Welfare Home of Henan Province, where they will volunteer to offer their medical services to the orphans there for the third quarter.

This is the 4th time that nurse Shirley came to Jiaozuo. On the train to the capital city Zhengzhou, she told us the conditions of the children in the welfare home: Some children have congenital deformity, and some have intelligence retardation, so it is difficult for them to cooperate in the examination, and efforts would be made in their examination. The children have no care from parents, and their experience is so pitiful.

7 hours later, we finally arrived at Jiaozuo Children’s Welfare Home. With the help of the physician and nurse, 21 children received health examination in total.

The children here mainly have Mongolian idiocy, cerebral palsy, congenital heart disease, cleft lip and palate and limb deformity, etc. After the diagnosis and evaluation by Dr.Qin, we found that there are problems in following aspects at present:

-FIRST-

Malnutrition

Most children are in condition of malnutrition, mainly manifested in: emaciation, microsomia, rickets (pigeon chest, funnel-breast and rib valgus), less teeth and enamel hypoplasia.Apart from the diseases of the children, such conditions are also related to the feeding history of the children. Many children over 6 months old have not received supplementary food, and the diet is still mainly breast milk.

-SECOND-

Most children are in condition of intelligence retardation

Most intelligence retardation cases are caused by primary diseases, such as Mongolian idiocy and cerebral palsy. But some children with congenital heart disease, cleft lip and palate and limb deformity are also intelligently retardant to an extent, which may be caused by long-term stay in the closed environment of welfare home, lack of care from family, lack of outdoor exercises or external contact as well as malnutrition.

Some children have deformity that needs surgical treatment

A one-year-old girl, named Xiao Mo, with congenital heart disease of tetralogy of fallot (TOF) has cyanotic lips and limbs, but she hasn’t received the surgery yet, and we hope that she can receive treatment as soon as possible.

Another 4-month-old boy Xiao Yu has deformity of ears, and Dr.Qin Yan consulted with a plastic expert and was informed that the child could only receive plastic surgery to correct the deformity after he is 7 years old.

Caution should be taken for special nursing of the diseases

Baby diapers were used by all children for urinary and fecal management, so some individuals had diaper dermatitis. Dr.Qin asked the nursers to change the diapers frequently, and apply baby bottom balm, and Nurse Shirley immediately applied Bactroban ointment on local skin ulceration of the children.In addition, a child with congenital cleft palate has milk choking when normal nipple feeding is practiced. Special nipples for baby with cleft palate have been recommended.

Healing brings hope

We set up special medical record number (MRN) in Shanghai United Family Hospital system for the 21 children who have received examination in this volunteered medical service. After the medical records are archived, we will follow the health status of each child and continue to provide evaluation and nursing advices in subsequent medical follow-ups.

June 15, 2017 – Chapin House partnered with United Foundation for China’s Health (UFCH) to raise money for children with congenital heart disorders.Any furniture and home accessories sold from October 1, 2017, Chapin House will donate a portion of the total sales to UFCH, which is in all RMB 34588.50. JFR Technology Co., Ltd

On the afternoon of August 22, 2017, at UFCH head quarters, a donation ceremony was held to commemorate the donation sponsored by the JFR Technology Co., Ltd. JFR donated a batch of German brand Nebulizers to UFCH. They were passed to each needy public welfare organization for the patients in need of help, especially the sick children.www.jfr.cn

September 21, 2017, L’LEONE International Co., Ltd. assisted the UFCH Jiaozuo trip, sending fresh fruit and nutrition for Jiaozuo Children’s Welfare Home.
